P.M. Update: Kingsburg traffic stop ends in shooting
The Fresno Bee (Published September 28, 2000) A Tulare County Sheriff’s Deputy was on routine administrative leave Thursday after shooting a Selma man in the stomach during a traffic stop. The deputy, whose name is not being released, fired two shots at Brian Hugh Lane, 36, after he ran away from the Kings Inn, near Ave. 384 and Highway 99 in Kingsburg late Wednesday night. Officials said the deputy shot Lane because he felt threatened. The shooting is under investigation. "At one point he turned around suddenly toward the officer," said Lt. Dahl Cleek of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department. "The officer fired two shots and one hit him in the left side of the stomach area." Lane was not armed, police said. He underwent surgery at University Medical Center in Fresno and was in fair condition Thursday. He is charged with possession of approximately 1/8 ounce of methamphetamine, resisting arrest and for violating probation. "He had some concerns that Lane was not complying to his orders," Cleek said. "The deputy had been calling to the subject to stop. At this point the subject was concealing his right hand in the waistband of his pants. The deputy felt more threatened as the subject was concealing himself." |
